People Manager - Fixed term 12 months

Job Purpose

Cover a maternity leave of a period of 12 months managing and developing core HR department functions including recruitment, employee relations, administration, payroll, employee engagement and training and development of staff. Work with the Head of People and Culture to deliver an effective people strategy for the organisation.

Responsibilities:

Delivery

  • Provide support, advice and training for managers in all areas of HR to empower them to effectively manage their departments and ensure a high-quality employee experience.
  • Complete all required HR administration including, but not limited to, writing contracts, employment letters and references, administration relating to pay and reward and payroll and payroll records.
  • Proactively manage all aspects of recruitment and selection including writing job descriptions, preparing interview questions and application forms, advertising roles to a diverse range of candidates, and assisting in candidate interviews as necessary.
  • Responsibility for improving practices for the student staff experience, taking ownership of the full employment life cycle and supporting line managers to implement, focusing on onboarding, induction, policies and engagement.
  • Develop HR functions at the Nursery working from the Nursery premises at least once a week, focusing on recruitment, employee relations, development plans, performance reviews, general admin related to HR.
  • Support the Head of People and Culture with the training and development of the workforce, ensuring they are equipped to meet the organisation’s strategic goals.
  • Monitor various aspects of employee performance such as attendance, sick leave, appraisals and probation.
  • Participate in the implementation of projects, policies, and procedures to help align the workforce with the strategic goals of the organisation.
  • Ensure legal compliance in all aspects of HR, recruitment, training and development.
  • Assist with HR budgets
  • Be an active part of driving our people strategy, taking responsibility for collating and presenting analytics to inform strategy and working with the Head of People and Culture to ensure HR functions are effective in delivering our strategy.

Stakeholders

  • Participate in HR networks and build relationships with staff in Reading University and other student unions to share expertise and learning.
  • Liaise, and build relationships, with training and development providers as required.

Other

  • Support the Health and Safety Committee logging accidents into the system.
  • Attend the Nursery Board meetings.
  • Help our elected Officers fulfil their roles.
  • Be an enthusiastic advocate for student leadership and the organisation’s values.
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the post.
  • Occasional weekend/evening work may be required.

  • Proven experience working as HR Manager or HR executive
  • Knowledge of HR systems and databases
  • Payroll experience
  • CIPD qualification and/or willingness to work towards level 5
